Hidden in my Heart

Someone asked me recently if it was important to memorize scripture. My “off the cuff” answer was that while it was good to know scripture, memorizing it was no longer essential. When I thought back on the conversation later, I realized how completely off base I was. While it is true that we can find scriptures easily by googling or some other search tool, which was the reason I gave in my answer, nothing compares to knowing the word and hiding it in your heart.

God’s word is His primary means for speaking to us. It is alive, divine, and breathes life into us when we read it prayerfully, seeking answers and seeking to know His heart. Through memorizing scripture, it with us at all times and in all circumstances. No one can ever take it away. It is there to be pondered, meditated upon, comforted by, and instructed by.

Every day each of us is becoming. We become what our thoughts are. We become the things we do and the things we value. We become what is in our hearts. I want Jesus to be the seed for all that I am becoming, so I will plant his word in my heart.

We put things in our hearts because we love them. By learning God’s word, we are showing him love.
